Main purpose of job:
You will help strengthen the UK’s presence and voice in Taiwan through creative, impactful communications and public diplomacy. The jobholder will plan, design and deliver engaging content for the British Office in Taipei, helping shape how key UK priorities in Taiwan — from growth, tech, security to education and UK soft power strengths — are understood by Taiwanese audiences. Working across the UKinTaiwan’s social media channels and traditional media engagement, the role turns complex policy issues into compelling stories that resonate online and in person.
Beyond communications, the role supports wider public diplomacy efforts that deepen UK–Taiwan relationships. This includes helping design campaigns, organising public/media events, supporting cultural and educational initiatives, engaging media/social media opinion leaders, and contributing to UK-related events such as high-profile visits, roundtables, conferences and soft power activities. The jobholder will work collaboratively with colleagues across the British Office to develop outreach that builds networks, showcases UK expertise and values, and enhances the UK’s reputation within Taiwanese society.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?
Building on the existing strong prosperous and dynamic relationship with Taiwan, we want Taiwanese audiences to see the benefits of a strong ties with the UK, be it in collaborating on innovative technology, celebrating our people-to-people links in education and culture, supporting our shared values internationally, strengthening the resilience of our societies, or simply enjoying GREAT Britain’s distinctive soft power. We also need to use comms tools to share important information with British nationals and businesses in Taiwan, including around travel to and from Taiwan and major benefits to Taiwanese youth, including Chevening scholarship, UK alumni networking and Youth Mobility Scheme.
In this role, you will contribute by taking on the following:
Communications (70%)
• Implementing British Office’s digital communications as part of the British Office’s wider communications strategy, based on British Office’s goals in Taiwan and the UK Government’s wider work around the world;
• Coordinating weekly social media activities, ensuring a steady drumbeat of content for all channels, particularly on IG and Facebook, across each of our campaigns;
• Write copy in Mandarin and English, working collaboratively with colleagues to create engaging digital output (graphics, photos, videos). Designing and running the digital aspects of British Office’s campaigns;
• Managing our social media channels, identifying effective ways to encourage engagement from the channel community and advising the wider team on content for our social media channels accordingly;
• Building the British Office’s digital audience and improving positive engagement and the British Office’s digital influence;
• Media monitoring and evaluating the impact of our social media content. Identifying influential partners on social media with whom we might interact on particular campaigns;
• Working closely with Political Section and Economic Section at the British Office to identify and plan their specific comms needs;
• Delivering effective handling of Taiwanese media in print, broadcast and online, to generate measurable engagement and high-impact coverage that promote the UK’s priorities in Taiwan
• Identifying best media opportunities for senior leadership to deliver HMG messages, e.g. press conferences, media briefings, roundtables, luncheons and dinners.
• Leading on media interview arrangements, accompanying and supporting interviewees from the British Office and UK Government visitors.
• Supporting the team’s wider work, including wider organisation of larger events;
• You also need to contribute to the British Office’s Public Comms during a crisis;
Stakeholder Engagement (15%)
• Maintaining and developing relationships with key stakeholders, including journalists, social media influencers, key opinion leaders, civil society, youth groups, and cultural institutions—to support both communications and broader public diplomacy goals.
Public Diplomacy and Outreach (15%)
• Contributing to the planning and delivery of wider public diplomacy activity, including outreach programmes, thematic campaigns, youth and civil society engagement, cultural diplomacy, or educational initiatives;
• Supporting colleagues to identify opportunities for UK–Taiwan cooperation and outreach, ensuring our Public Diplomacy activities reach priority audiences;
• Assisting in organising or delivering British Office events that advance UK soft power or strengthen key networks beyond the communications sphere.
Additionally, you will also:
• Participate actively in our corporate agenda, helping to build an inclusive and developmental culture within the team and wider network.
• As the role evolves, the jobholder may take on additional public diplomacy responsibilities and support new strands of Public Diplomacy work as UK–Taiwan priorities develop.
